Many well-known journalists have taken their first professional steps at the Institute of Journalism in Dortmund. Among them are public broadcaster ARD’s chief EU correspondent in Brussels, Marcus Preiß, Henning Sußebach, reporter at the weekly newspaper ZEIT and Dr. Nadine Bilke, head of public broadcaster ZDFneo. All of them have learned the skills to produce quality journalism at the Institute of Journalism. Studying journalism in Dortmund opens doors to work in media organisations all over the country.
At the Institute of Journalism, we aim to adapt our curriculum continuously to the rapid changes in the media world. With basic knowledge in media law and media ethics, communication science, video journalism and editorial management – just to name some examples – those who graduate from TU Dortmund University with a BA or MA degree have the skills to produce quality journalism in digital media as well as radio, television, newspapers and magazines. In times of a rapidly changing media market, graduates should be able to look towards the professional future with confidence. The journalism curriculum in Dortmund focuses on these new challenges.
Students who want to specialise right from the start can focus on one major area. In the BA programme “Economic policy Journalism”, economists and practitioners teach students how to communicate complex politico-economic topics and developments. The programme combines a degree in economics with practical training. The MA programme “Economics & Journalism” gives students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge as well as to train in multimedia-journalism.
The BA and MA programmes “Science Journalism” combine the study of life sciences, medicine or physics with the study of and practical training in journalism. In addition, the Institute offers students the opportunity to specialise in “Data Journalism”.
The BA and MA programme “Music Journalism” teaches methods and techniques of media criticism and reporting of music. It provides training in music as well as in multimedia journalism.
